Gemstone glossary

Mohs scale. The Mohs scale, developed in 1812 by german geologist and mineralogist Frederich Mohs, is the scale of mineral hardness. It measures a gemstone’s hardness in relation to other gemstones based on its ability to resist scratching.

Swarovski glossary

MQ – Standard quality. Swarovski MQ Genuine Gemstones exhibit excellence in machine cut, brilliance and polish, however they will include stones with minor flaws such as slight defects in facet symmetry, which are only visible under a 10x magnification loupe. MQ stones have a clarity range from eye-clean to eye-visible.

FQ – Special requirement. Swarovski FQ Genuine Gemstones exhibit excellence in machine cut, brilliance and polish. Each stone is cut to achieve perfect facet symmetry and is colour sorted. FQ stones are free of visible colour zoning, allowing for only the slightest inclusions. FQ stones have no defects visible to the naked eye and only minor flaws when viewed under a 10x magnification loupe.

Thermal Colour Fusion (TCF) technology is used to create a range of colours from a white (colourless stone). Patented in Austria and the United States, Swarovski‘s TCF technology enhances the surface of the stone with a permanent, hard-ceramic enhancement, which is resistant to production and cleaning methods such as ultra-sonic, magnetic pin, and acid baths. The TCF technology restricts the colouration to the near-surface region of the stone. >
