Black Spinel

Spinel is found in many colours due to the presence of various impurities. Historically, red spinel has been used to imitate ruby in a variety of ceremonial jewellery. Now treasured for its own sake, spinel is a favourite of gemmologists because of its brilliance, durability (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) and range of colours including red, pastel shades of pink and purple and blues sometimes called cobalt.
